That’s not the case in this southern Sri Lanka community where the fishermen hoist themselves on stilted sticks, balancing very carefully while they wait for their nibbles.

The custom probably seems like an archaic tradition passed down for several generations.

However, it’s actually relatively modern, beginning during World War II when food was scarce and fishing became more prominent.

With this method, they’re able to space out and share the sea.

The tradition has been passed down, now embraced by two generations.
